I write and sing sad songs," reads Jasmine Jethwa’s Instagram bio. Not the most groundbreaking introduction, perhaps, but the young artist from South London creates mystical, folk-tinged acoustic pop that truly sticks. With a goosebump-inducing voice, she draws inspiration from the music that flowed through her father’s iPod on childhood road trips – David Gray, Tracy Chapman, Dido, Gipsy Kings, The Eagles. This deep connection to the classics has led to comparisons with both Joni Mitchell and Taylor Swift.
In 2020, Jasmine released her debut EP, Hurricane, to critical acclaim from BBC Introducing, Clash, gal-dem, The Independent, and more. Since then, she has completed two sold-out tours across Europe and the UK, played multiple sold-out shows in London, released three EPs, and a string of singles.
Jethwa’s biggest dream was originally to become a dancer, but music took her in a different direction. Her songs remind us that we don’t always know where we’ll end up, but we can listen, feel—and maybe even be won over. Her performance in the magical Håkonshallen at Bergenfest might just do the trick.
